Methods and
types of therapy
Alongside hypnotherapy, I draw on several other gentle, evidence-informed approaches – including BLAST, EMDR, NLP and CBT. Each one works in a slightly different way, but they all share the same aim: to ease distress, change unhelpful patterns and help you feel safer, calmer and more in control of your life
THE REVOLUTIONARY BLAST TECHNIQUE
BLAST (Bi-Lateral Analysis and Stimulation Treatment) is a gentle, trauma-focused approach that uses precise side-to-side eye movements and specific wording to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. It works with how trauma is stored in the brain, so your system no longer reacts as if the threat is still happening right now.
During a BLAST session you stay fully aware and in control while we focus on a specific memory or trigger. After treatment, most people can still remember what happened, but it no longer has the same intense emotional or physical impact on their everyday life.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a way of understanding how your thoughts, language and behaviour all link together, and then gently changing the patterns that no longer serve you. In simple terms, it helps you notice the stories you’re running in your head and the automatic reactions you’ve learned over time, so you can choose more helpful ones instead.
In sessions, we might use NLP to reframe old beliefs (“I’m not good enough”), shift unhelpful internal dialogue, or reduce the emotional charge around certain situations. The aim is to create clearer thinking, calmer responses and more confident choices in everyday life, without you needing to “power through” by willpower alone.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that helps the brain process distressing or traumatic memories so they feel less intense and overwhelming.
While you briefly bring a memory or feeling to mind, the therapist guides your eyes in side-to-side movements (or uses taps/sounds),
which seems to help the brain “file away”
what happened in a more organised, less triggering way.
You stay awake, aware and in control throughout. EMDR doesn’t erase what happened, but it can help it feel more like something that’s firmly in the past rather than something you’re still reliving.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
(CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a practical, structured approach that explores how your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours are all connected.
The idea is that unhelpful thinking patterns can keep difficult emotions and habits going, even when you want things to change.
In CBT, we work together to notice these patterns and gently test out more balanced ways of thinking and responding in
real-life situations.
Over time, this can reduce anxiety and low mood, improve coping, and help you feel more confident and in control of how you handle everyday life.
